German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. According to the American Kennel Club, it was the third most popular dog breed in 2020, just behind the Labrador Retriever and French Bulldog.

The German Shepherd was first bred in the late 1800s by a German army officer. The dog was bred as a herding dog or a shepherd. In the early 1900s, the dog became extremely popular in the United States, and they’ve never looked back from there, remaining popular all over the world ever since.

The German Shepherd is a versatile pointy ear dog with amazing athleticism and intelligence. It is no surprise that GSDs are staples of police forces all over the world. Siberian Husky

It is rather commonly known that the Siberian Husky is a breed that had its origin from up north, used as sled dogs thanks to their thick fur and endurance in the cold. These dogs will always be written in history thanks to their part in the “serum run” in 1925. That was when an emergency serum was transported by dogsled to fight an epidemic.

Siberian Huskies are some of the most loyal and hardworking dogs that you can find. They can be mischievous at times, but that only makes them all the more lovable. Australian Cattle Dog

So far, the dogs in this article have been rather big. If you’re more a fan of small dogs with pointy ears, then the Australian Cattle Dog is a very pointy-eared breed! It isn’t one of the most popular breeds that you will find, ranking 55th on the AKC’s list, but that doesn’t mean this pup isn’t a furry bundle of joy.

It is no surprise that this dog originates from Australia, as the name makes very obvious. This dog was bred to handle the challenges that the Australian terrain presented to them, such as the heat and large distances. Several breeds were crossbred to eventually produce the ACD, essential to herding cattle in Australia. The beef industry in the country owes a lot to them.

But working and herding dogs never stick to their trade, do they? It’s no surprise that so many people have taken these dogs with upright ears on as pets. They make for delightful pets, and their cute faces and distinctive fur make them stand out among other breeds.

These dogs are alert and curious, so don’t be surprised when they want to investigate every sound they hear or if they try and herd other pets!

Great Dane

The Great Dane is an exciting choice of dog to have on a list about dogs with bat ears. If you’ve seen a lot of Great Danes, you might recognize that many of them don’t have pointy ears at all! Their ears droop instead. Well, there are also Great Danes with pointy ears, and there’s a good reason for this.

The natural state of a Great Dane is to have big floppy ears. Those with distinctive pointy ears are those that have cropped ears. The ears are surgically cut, similar to docked tails, but in this case, they are then made to heal with a straight object like popsicle sticks holding them up over weeks. This is one of the most popular breeds with these, and it is accepted as part of the breed standard by the AKC. As a result, a lot of them that you see may have those large pointy ears.

The Great Dane is one of the biggest dog breeds, but they are very friendly and committed to you as the owner despite that size. These dogs with large pointy ears will make for dependable friends.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi, often referred to as the Corgi, is one of the most beloved dogs! These small dogs with pointy ears are absolutely lovable from nose to tail, and they are very smart too! Don’t let their size fool you. These started off as amazing herding dogs.

The Welsh Corgi is a breed with ancestors dating back all the way to the 1100s. It wasn’t until the 1800s that the breed broke off from their cousins, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Those pointed ears are part of what makes this breed differ from the Cardigan.

The Queen of England is perhaps the world’s most famous Corgi lover! She’s said to have had over 30 of them over 68 years! That’s a lot of love for these partly white dogs with pointy ears!

Portuguese Podengo

A less common breed, the Portuguese Podengo makes for a fantastic furry companion if you love dogs with ears up. If you want them big or medium, you can get them either way and if you’d prefer them furry or smooth-haired, you can also get any of those coat types. This dog has a lot of variation!

The Podengo’s origin isn’t the best known but is thought to be from hunting dogs that moved with 600 and 700 BC traders. These dogs are very versatile, so it is no surprise that they were bred into different sizes for different purposes. The breed finally made its way into the USA in 1994.

One thing that many will like about this breed is that they can thrive well on their own. They are independent dogs and very smart at that too. Training them is very easy, and you won’t have to worry too much about them if you ever have to leave them at home alone. This pointy ear dog makes for a great protector for your family!
