X is a tricky letter. It always has been and always will be. I wouldn’t be surprised if you believed there wasn’t a single dog breed starting with X. However, there are a couple of those, surprisingly.

You might be looking for dog breeds that start with X because you want one to match someone’s name (Xavier!). Or, if you’re just inquisitive, you might be looking for breeds you never knew existed. Perhaps it’s the last answer needed for your crossword.

There are quite a few situations where knowing dogs that start with X can be useful. There are many breeds out there, so I might not be giving you an exhaustive list.

Xoloitzcuintli

The first thing you may want to know is how to pronounce Xoloitzcuintli. It is clearly quite a task to spell, so pronunciation is probably even more so. This can be a mouthful even if you know how to say it, but for those of you who want to try it, “show-low-eets-queent-lee” is how it’s pronounced.

Xoloitzcuintli is also called Xolo. They’re also known as the Mexican Hairless dog. This breed comes in both a coated and hairless variety. 

A thin body devoid of hair characterizes the hairless variety of this breed. They tend to have just a little hair their heads and on the part of the tail. They are quick to groom due to the giant furry coat on their bodies. The coated type comes with a closely matched coat that is shiny.

They are slender dogs with elegant yet muscular bodies. The V-shaped ears are characteristic of their head. The ears show increased alertness, particularly when the dog is in a serious mood.

These dogs are relatively energetic and easy to train. Therefore, they make for perfect pets. For anyone considering a dog breed that starts with X, the Xolo is a great choice.

The Xoloitzcuintli can weigh up to 55 pounds and stand at 20 inches.

Xiasi

The Xiasi Dog is also known as the Xiasi Quan and originated in the Chinese province of Guizhou. 

Their distinctive white wire coat, broad face, and lean muscular body are suitable for the purpose of their breeding – hunting. They can travel quickly and pursue rapid and agile prey. They have a strong sense of smell and incredible pace and stamina. 

Named after the local village of Xiasi, they were believed to have brought riches and prosperity to their owners. 

Originally, these beautiful dogs were the hunter, but they also worked to defend the home. The intellect of Xiasi meant that they were easy to train and were a valued part of family life. Their kind disposition at home, and their very responsiveness to human guidance, made them famous as pets. 

The Xiasi Quan (their official name) has been living with Guizhou’s people for a long time. They are some of the best-known Chinese breeds. In their home province, Xiasi is bred in tournaments to battle the boars. This tragic form of entertainment has many bouts, each lasting about three minutes. The dog measured on their ability to strike and how many attacks they have performed. 

While fearless and competitive in competition, they remain gentle and affectionate at home. Unfortunately, their numbers are dropping with the breed, which is now on the verge of extinction soon. It is sad to hear that about one of the few dog breeds that start with X.
