If there was ever a book on every single dog breed, that would make for a huge book! There are so many dog breeds out there that it is pretty much impossible to know all of them. It’s a shame because some of them are really interesting to know about.

Fortunately for you, I’ve put together a list of some dog breeds that start with D. You might have heard of some of these, and others you might never have known existed! I hope this list helps you out. You might even get one of these breeds that you didn’t know much about before! That would be nice!

Drever

The Drever is a Swedish perfume hound that looks like a cross between a Corgi and a Beagle. It is used for drevs, a deer hunting method in which the dog drives the animals directly to the hunters.

They’re almost always used solely as hunting dogs rather than pets, which is probably a good thing—the last thing you want is to come home to find out that your dog has hunted a whole deer herd in your living room.

Dalmatian

These dogs are loved for their distinctive black and white spotted coat and were initially bred to protect horses and coaches. This is one of the more popular dog breeds starting with D.

They are muscular dogs who enjoy training, making them a perfect breed for people who love being outdoors. They are loyal to their family, and they can be suspicious of outsiders.

Denmark Feist

Denmark Feist is a small hunting dog whose history dates back to Virginia in the early 20th century. The first Denmark Feist was sold to the Slade family in exchange for three opossum hides, a big raccoon, and a wagon wheel—a price that seems to me to be fair. 

This is how this breed came to be. These dogs that start with D originate from the US and not Denmark, though!

These dogs are known to be absolutely quiet when hunting, and they are used to track anything from bobcats to feral pigs.

Deutscher Wachtelhund

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is a medium-sized dog typically used for hunting. It is also known as the German Spaniel.

They are very energetic dogs and are muscular in body tone. Suppose you’re looking for a dog in which you can do many outdoor activities. In that case, the Deutscher Wachtelhund is an excellent choice.

Dutch Shepherd

These dogs have been trained by Dutch farmers to watch over their flocks. This dog looks like a brindle-colored version of its German cousin, and like these breeds, the Dutch Shepherds make excellent guard dogs. 

These dogs starting with D were almost extinct during the Second World War, and it’s still a rare breed today, although Dutch breeders are working hard to remedy this.

Dogo Argentino

The Dogo Argentino is a huge, muscular dog bred as a hunting dog for big-game animals like boar.

These muscular dogs love exercising, whether you’re taking them for hiking, biking or racing, or just playing games outdoors.

If you can’t devote a lot of time to exercise your dog, this isn’t a breed for you.

Doodleman Pinscher

This hybrid breed is the result of a cross between a Doberman Pinscher and the purebred Poodle. Doodleman Pinscher is bold and flexible. They are a large breed of dog, thanks to the parents. This is one of the lesser-known dog breeds that start with D.

They are mainly used as watchdogs or bodyguards. They can also be an excellent option for racing, herding, sighting, and military service.

Dogue Brasileiro

Often known as the Brazilian Dogo, the Dogue Brasileiro is a very modern breed of dog. These dogs that start with the letter D were first bred in 1978. 

The breed started when a Brazilian breeder crossed his Bull Terrier with a neighbor’s Boxer. The resulting pups were both more robust than their parents and more caring and affectionate.

They make excellent guard dogs with a strong attachment to family and a good temperament. 

Drentsche Patrijshond

The Drentsche Patrijshond (also known as Drent or Dutch Partridge Dog) is a medium to large dog that can live for up to 14 years.

These dogs were bred as farm dogs, used for anything from hunting to carting. They’re incredibly smart and take a little time to train, as long as they’re interested. They’re also extremely energetic dogs who need exercise and affection.

If you’re looking for a dog that you can take with you for outdoor activities or games, the Drent is the ideal pick. This dog starting with D has been around for about 4 centuries now. So you know there’s a lot to love!

Dorkie

Dorkies were initially bred in Germany through the crossbreeding of two purebreds: Dachshund and Yorkshire Terrier. 

They are playful family dogs who display love and affinity to their owners and their friends. These dogs starting with D, are small, just like their parents. They grow to about seven inches tall.

Due to their small size, you should be careful when leaving them around children. They are great around kids, but the dog may unintentionally get injured.
